What you can see. New metal roof. Tore off awning and "dog house". Replaced with reclaimed cedar awning. Dead trees removed in foreground and background

What you can't see. Two new sump pumps working well. One new one on hand if needed. Basement drainage pipes replaced with ridged pipes that move water up and then out, instead of snaking around on the basement floor.Replaced furnace and hot water tank.

Upstairs, replaced four interior doors so that they are matching. Moved the placement of two of them to improve space usage.

Tore out wall board and drywalled the guest room. Counted 7 layers of paint and paper. Stole the closet space from bedroom three to make a full wall of storage.

Robin has been off work since September due to health. It is not going to improve and limits what he can do in a day. Not having his pay check also limits what we can do. Roof is almost paid for. I am thinking about paint to cover all that brown. Soft yellow or a stony grey? What do you think?
Greetings dear reader. It is with great relief that I can report that "THE MOVE" is complete. Well, almost and probably as far as it will be. There are still three large items remaining in the old yard and a plethora of perennials that may not get relocated, but physically, and emotionally we have said good bye to our old home.

Many shrubs and flowers have been rehomed. Yesterday we delivered a van full at our on-line auction meet up.
Which would look better if the TV stand was on an angle. However, the cables to the receivers on the roof were installed with NO SLACK! I guess the cable guy figured I would never want to move the equipment, out of the window and into the cabinet.

Another job that I have been working on has been filling the pot holes and soft spots in the driveway with pea gravel that was under our pergola at the old house. Doing a few pails, each time I was down at the old place, kept it from being an over taxing job. I finally scooped it all. Then a post on facebook, gave me a lead on more free pea gravel. So I continue to scoop a few pails, whenever I am in town.

Finally, this morning, when I cleared the cob web out of my ears, it was puzzling to me to hear the basement sump pump, running and running. It usually runs for less than a minute. A quick peek, down the stairs confirmed we had issues as there was three inches of water on the floor. A split in the hose was the initial issue. Then the main pump refused to turn on. Switched in a new pump, and it is under control again. On Robin's next days off, we will address the basement drainage system.

The forecast for this week is non-stop summer weather. That will keep the focus for me, on outside work. I am thinking a little fresh paint should be on the agenda.
The longer I wait to make this next post, the harder it becomes to get started. What have we done in the past 27 days? Lots and not much. Depends on my mood at the moment. How about another pictorial summary?
Tore out the dishwasher. Not only was there no shut off valve, but part of the incoming pipe was siliconed and duct taped. Why does it not surprise me that the unseen parts look like crap? If this was satisfactory work to the person(s) that first had the DW installed, I would hate to know what shape their knickers are in.
The kitchen sink got and R&R. The drains, pipes, and tap are all new. Problems still though as the pipes are too low for a refuse container to sit under the sink. And even though the packages were identical in the store, the drains are different. So the only real improvement here is that the dripping drain pipes have been fixed.
Through out the past month there has been great love shown by dear friends that gave their time and energy to help with packing, moving, and encouragement. Sometimes for an hour. Sometimes for a day. When I count my blessings, my dears, you are right at the top.

Robin will be home tomorrow. The focus of the next week will be to complete the move over. The house is nearly empty, but the yard and garden presents a challenge. Every time Robin is home it is raining. Here's hoping the forecast is wrong and we can drive into the garden to load up.

We are near the end of the move out. Who would have thought it could take
three months? I have read that a household accumulate 1000 pounds of
possessions per person, per year. Someone else must be living the
minimalistic life because I am sure we surpassed that statistic by many
fold. The downsizing will continue for a long time, until we actually fit into this new space.
Day 50, Tuesday May 20. Robin is on his way home from camp. The honey-do list is two pages long. And that is just the little, 15 minutes jobs. Truth is the 15 minutes jobs are actually about three hours each, by the time you gather the tools, supplies, answer the phone, and check what friends are doing on facebook.

But first, lets jump back and to a pictorial review of the last ten days.

Day 40, Living room floor, laminate is down.
Also on day 46, Ran to city for more paint. Came home to find someone had taken a chain saw to the big tree. Still some large parts to cut. Going to need a bigger saw, I suppose. Thanks to the mystery woodsman.
Day 47 The Living room walls got their 2nd and final coat of paint. Having some trouble with getting camera card to download so the pictures for the week sort of stopped here.

Also on Day 47 the ladies of the Colinton Anglican Church came to my old garden to dig perennials for their Annual Perennial Sale. I hit an emotional wall at this point. We have worked very hard for six years on the gardens at the old house. I am angry at the family members that made it impossible for me to stay there. It was hard to watch the people digging up the flowers, but I kept telling myself that the plants will go to other gardeners. That is a good thing. They cannot stay, because there will be no one interested in looking after them. I am suffering a broken heart, over the gardens and over the lost family relationships. Well maybe not so much over the lost family relationships. More like grief over the relationships that might have been/never were. Dear friend D reminds me that this situation is not my fault. I shrug. I sigh. I pack another box to bring to new house.

Days 48 and 49, I continue to struggle with my emotions. Sometime I look at the new place and hate it, for the loss it represents. Poor old house. This situation is not her fault either.
Day Thirty One. Shopping trip to city, alone. Ceiling paint, baseboards and casings, scoping out washer and dryer sets.

Day Thirty Two. Get back to work on living room ceiling. Continue to move stuff up, both into storage and the items that make the short list as necessary for survival, and familiar comforts.

Day Thirty Three. Second coat on living room ceiling. Got invited to turkey dinner.

Day Thirty Four. Sunday is my day off from OTU. Storage Wars meet and coffee with friends.

Day Thirty Five. Started in on living room walls. Removing trim. Scraping the build up of layers of paint, filling holes.

Day Thirty Six. Had a session with massage therapist. Hopefully arm and shoulder will behave now let me get things done a little faster. Afternoon, Robin gets home.

Dogs have been running back to the old home, for no apparent reason. Have one tied up now, and maybe that will keep them both at new home.

Snoopy has moved to garage, but she has no plans to make friends with Jo Katt.

We are getting ready to welcome a third cat, Whiskers to the farm.

Day Thirty Seven. It takes most the day to get started, because we need scissors, then a pen, then Tuc-tape, etc. One thing at a time, each trip between houses. But we do get started on laying the living room floor.

And just because life likes to keep throwing curve balls, Robin's son and daughter-in-law are relocating to Calgary. They have asked us to take their old dog Kiwi. She is a Great Pyrenees, as is Lucy. So what could we say but sure. We have the space. Kiwi is very low maintenance. As long as our situation doesn't change, we will be happy to add her to the tribe.

Day Thirty Eight. Of to city for medical appointment, and more shopping for trim, vent covers, and we splurged and picked out a Miele washer and dryer. I figure, overall this place is such a dump. Having top end, state of the art appliances will help me from sliding into a blue funk about living in this miserable hovel.

In the evening, we had a couple of friends over for help to empty the garden house. Followed that with drinks around the first fire of the season.

Day Thirty Nine. Our shed arrives. Well no, not really our shed. The one that we asked about, two weeks before we ordered our shed, arrived. Somehow the wires got crossed and our speculative questions were interpreted to be a definite order. Everybody is feeling bad about this. We work out a deal, and cancel the much larger shed that was to be delivered next week. After small shed gets positioned, the garden shed gets loaded at the old place and is brought to its new location.

First Sunrise at new home

Have arrived at the point that I can say I am living at the new house. Spent my first night here. Woke up to bad back, no dogs and the <strike>delight</strike> trouble of seeing a red fox crossing through the yard. First thought, "How cool!" Second thought, "Bad for cats!" I opened window, yelled and foxy switched into high gear as he shot out of the yard. A short while later, I heard a robin singing. Spring has arrived!

Day 24 Subfloor in living room is complete. Robin did measuring and cutting. Our helper drilled the screws in. I vacuumed sawdust, prepared lunch and made executive decisions. The one that bugs me still is Robin asking if the floor boards shouldn't run the short way across the room. When I get asked a question like this, I have to stop and think/feel what it would be like to do it this way. Robin thought they should run east west, so that the line continues through the breakfast room. The whole thought process for this had me incredibly unsettled, but I have to know why it upsets me. I like to spout out, "It's bad fung shui" as a reason but why is it bad?

Living Room Sub Floor

When I stopped looking at (picturing in my head) the living room floor and looked at the breakfast room, I knew right away why the floor boards had to run the long way, north/south. Because when the breakfast room is done, it will have the same floor as the kitchen and the boards will be running north/south. There! Executive decision, with a reason.

So why is it still bugging me? It's not the decision that has me on edge, but that Robin would come up with the idea. Not sure if he is thinking creatively or if he doesn't see the final picture. I will have to be careful to not leave him unsupervised with finishing decisions.

Day 25. I had help from Miss B to remove wallpaper. She surprised us at how well she can handle a scrapper and how long she stayed interested in the chore. Also good friend MW arrived with lunch and stayed to help wash walls.

Grandchildren, Cohen and Rebecca are spending the weekend with us. It is probably the last time they will sleep in their rooms at the old house. Didn't seem to bother them much as they explored the new house, investigated the bedrooms and assigned themselves spaces. Empty rooms leave lots to the imagination. Games of hotel, house, and camping ensued for the rest of Friday and all of Saturday.

Day 26. Living room ceiling gets primed.

Yes, that fresh snow again. But not to fear. It is all gone by the next afternoon. While I was busy with the rollers, Robin switched out light fixtures and worked on small projects.

Day 27 With the help of our Philippian friends, Robin hauled several loads to the landfill transfer site. Abandoned appliances abound on this old farm. There was no charge, this weekend for stoves, washers, dryers, etc. Fridges still had a $10 disposal charge.

Day 28 We are bagged. It is the end of Robin's week off and he jokes he needs to go to work to have a rest. Temperature is in the teens today. We crack a beer and spend some time exploring the farm and the buildings. We find more abandoned appliances.

Day 29 Robin is just ready to leave for work when he calls me to bring the pliers. Sassafrass has had a run in with a porcupine. She is none to happy to have the quills pulled. Each day, we move the dogs back to the new house. Each morning, they are back at the old house. Each afternoon, the next door neighbour that is siding his house, stops to wave at our little parade of pooches being led by a slow moving mini-van.

Later in the evening, I wanted to give the dogs a bit of ham for a treat and I opened the door. Sass came up to the door and tossed (yes, she flicked her head and tossed!) a dead mouse on the mat, at my feet. I screamed. Pointing and yelling didn't convince her that she had to remove her present. So I got a piece of cardboard and meant to flip it out the door. I flipped it into the open floor vent! Screamed again. What to do? What to do? What would McGyver do? I tried putting a sock on the vacuum hose but it didn't work. So I abandoned the sock and just sucked up the critter. Love my Dyson vacuum. So easy to dispose of the detritus.

Sass's feelings are hurt. I was so unappreciative of her gift. She is not talking to me.

I have been moving smaller items into storage in the garage all month . Have not got as much as I would have like done. Then I remind myself, how much of the month was snowy, cold, slushy, muddy. There are limitations to how much I can lift and carry in a day before I pay for it with reduced activity the next day. So I have tried to chip away at the job, without causing mess, damage (did I mention I got the van stuck in the mud in the yard and had to call the tow truck to extricate it?) or injury. This day, I moved over my basic toiletries and my pillows and prepared to spend my first night in the new house.

It is also notable that today we had the internet moved to the new house. Bed, coffee pot, internet. What more does a person need to call it home?

Which brings us to today, Day 30. The final day of the first month. (It will take some math from now on, to keep track of what day it is.) It is interesting to note that in the last week I have become aware that much of the move is not physical, but mental. While the stuff is still at the old home, I am ready to be here and start figuring out how we will live in this space.

Has it been a week already? Let's see what has been accomplished.

Day 21. Monday. Best weather yet this year. Scrubbed the main doors and walls at the entrance.

Robin got off work early and was home by evening.

Day 22. Tuesdays. To the city for door knobs, Ordered a shed from the Hutterites. This is a major expense but will provide secure storage for furniture and possessions while house is under renovations. When it is finished with that purpose, it will be Robin's workshop and a place to park the tractor.

Day 23. Last weeks snow has melted. Weather has now turned to rain. The dogs that did so well at the new house for three days, have taken to jumping the fence and returning to the old house. They have done this twice now. Hope that when I start staying at the new house, they will want to stay there too.

Last week, snow. This dog shelter, made with salvaged supplies is one of the "DIY gone wrong" projects we get to deal with.

Opened up floorboards in living room. Shaved off the corners of the joists that were pushing the boards up. Floor now flat. In that spot anyways. While we will never be able to play marbles in this house, that one spot on the floor was too wonky for me to let it lie. So glad that Robin has lots of tools.
The exterior door knobs on house and garage are now all working and all on one key. The latch set on the right door pictured here, was broken. Instead of replacing it, (and any old passage knob would work) someone filled the space with silicone and screwed it back on. It took over and hour to scrape out the silicone and get the broken latch out.

Had to go back to city to get vent covers. Forgot to write them down on list, and forgot to buy when at store on Tuesday. Gas has spiked to $1.26/liter. That sort of doubled the cost of the vent covers.

Next, begin sub-floor in living room.

You are going to laugh at me for this. I took the clock radio from my bedroom to the new house, so I could have some company. This morning, when I woke up, knowing that coffee is 1.5 miles away, I got up, dressed, brushed hair into ponytail and made bed. Walked into kitchen to find the clock registering 4:30. Now I have been known to get up at 4:30 in the summer. Light sensitive in summer. Seasonal affective disorder in winter. But it is April. So back to bed until 7:00.

Did I mention it is April? And that it is snowing for the third day in a row? I had to shovel the garage door. It had drifted as high as my knees. However, trusty snow tires still on the van, I made it to the new house and got dug in before 9:00

It was a monumental moment for me at about 1:00. I got to the end. The kitchen cupboards have been scrubbed. Top to bottom. Left to right. All surfaces cleaned and disinfected, to the best of my ability. Today the bottom ones were finished. At the very end, a door came off where a chunk of framing is missing. Robin will have to fabricate a fix when he is back.

Now we will begin to prep for painting. I am trying to do the best job I can while considering the constraints of time and energy. Bought cupboard enamel last week in the city and prepped up a small shelf and one drawer so I could give them a quick brush and see if I like the end result. This paint is supposed to be very professional and has a self-leveling component. You have to put it on quite thick, but then one does not want drips and sags either. Probably after the third drawer, or so, I will lose my perfectionist aspirations and just head for the finish line.
Tomorrow is Good Friday. Commitments take me away from the house again, although I will have to be there to look after the pets. Have started looking for a mature cat that needs to be re-homed. Jo Katt, needs companionship and will need help with rodent control. I imagine we have the resources to provide a good home for at least six or eight felines.
Change your mindset. Change your reality. Switching home base is working!

Still sleeping at the old house, until I can get a bed moved over. But this morning, I got up and had no coffee here. I had to dress and head over to new house, where puppies were so happy to see me. We had our morning coffee there and by 7 am, the rubber gloves were on and cleaning commenced.

It has become apparent the kitchen renovations done in the '80's did not employ a cabinet maker. A carpenter perhaps, but not a finish carpenter. I pulled the stove and was dismayed to find this.
What we have here is DIY with no pride of workmanship. The plywood cupboards were left bare, no paint. The edges of the counter is raw, no laminate. the wall is part drywall, with four inches of vapour barrier that has never been trimmed. and to the left of that is the original fiberboard that was used for walls when this house was first built. The laminate flooring, which is a fairly recent instalation, is held in place with common nails. And the receptacle for the range was never installed properly. (yes, I turned the breaker off before trying to unplug stove.) On top of the unfinished surfaces is years of grease and oil that has dribbled down. It is immposible to clean it off of these raw surfaces.

This prompted an odd moment for me. I felt so sad for the little house. No one had ever cared enough to take care of her in these unseen but important areas. It was like the house was embarrassed for having to reveal herself. But it is not her fault that she was not loved or cared for properly. I don't know how much I can fix of all this, but I can help her make the best of what she has. I promised the little house, I will do my best to help her earn back some self-respect. So rub-a-dub, scrub. The cleaning carried on for a five hour stretch. By the time I was done, the upper cabinets were completed.

Today, I feel like I got somewhere. Tomorrow, we finish the bottom cabinets.

It has been a whole week since I did anything at the house. I should be so much further along. I am reminded that we were on the road for six days. "You can't be in two places at once." I am told. But somehow, I should have figured a way to do the road trip and progress on the cleaning. I pause to daydream about a cleaning fairy that does my bidding. I send her instructions by telepathy.

Still I am feeling discouraged and having trouble prioritizing my efforts. So I go around in circles for awhile. Then, a plan begins to formulate. I am at the old house, wishing I was at the new house. But by the time the chores are done, bed made, pets fed, messages answered, the morning slips away, and then I am busy with commitments that take me away from the houses again. To wait for a large chunk of time and corresponding energy to go to the new house and dig in, is difficult to orchestrate. So I do some laundry and wipe the counters in the old house, thinking about all the work I am not getting to in the new house. Can you see the problem here?

Change your mindset, change your reality. It's time for me to flip my home base. If I am operating out of the new house, I will be there for the wee moments that I can use to chip away at the larger projects. Add that to the chunks of time where one can really dig in and things should start to come around.

So on day fifteen, I relocated the cat to the new garage along with another van full of bins from the basement. And then each of the dogs came to the new yard. They had just spent the weekend at a kennel, so I figured now was the best time to confuse them some more. There is a makeshift dog run, that is attached to the house. I can see the question marks floating above their heads. But they are comfortable and safe and don't have to be tied up to keep them from bolting back to the old house.

Also my coffeemaker found it's new spot. And I had hoped to move a bed up, but on my own, this won't happen as it is snowing and slushy again. I will be patient and wait for a helper so I don't drop my mattress in the mud.

Just yesterday, the yard was clear of snow and ice. Thoughts were turning to spring work, and then like a late April Fool's joke, (a bad one mind you) winter returns. With snow in the forecast until Friday, it will be awhile before a rake is needed.

It was shopping day in the city today. Benjamin Moore paints. Rona for sub-flooring. Home Depot for laminate flooring. And a few sundries. Top speed on drive home was 80 km/h. Poor old truck.

This will be unloaded on Day Ten.

We also admired appliances and picked up a few inexpensive light fixtures. So many critical decisions made in such a short time frame left me with insomnia, so around 2 AM, instead of just tossing and turning I spent some time drawing out the floor plan.

As we are going away this weekend, there will be no further activity at OTU, for a few days. See you when we get back.
Well that went (fairly) well......

The last of the Christmas bins have been moved from old basement to new garage.

Although that is not all of the Christmas "stuff" Yes it is a lot. I used to decorate trees for businesses. Did I mention before that the house I am leaving had ample room for storage?

Next I got a good hot pail of water with TSP, Dawn and CLR Grease Magnet mixed up. Donned my rubber gloves, wiped two shelves and was interrupted by one of my most favourite people in the world.

Three year old Miss Bee came to see Gramma's new house. One of her astute observations was, "This is your bedroom? Where is your bed?"

So that was it for the cleaning, because housework will always be there but little girls that want to dance and sing in the sun beams are a miraculous moment of time that needs to be savoured.

Miss Bee and her mom left the old house with a box full of scrapbook albums. Then Robin arrived home, fresh off night shift. We completed a tour of the new house, waving our hands about and drawing pictures in the air of moved walls and new doorways. Tomorrow will be shopping day. Sub-flooring. Yipee!

Today was one of those days. Worked on all sorts of projects but didn't seem to get anywhere. And at the end of it, when I had almost completed the blog entry, we lost internet connection and the whole of it disappeared. Sigh.

Short summary of day. Vacuumed cupboards and living room floor. Brought ten bins of Christmas decorations over to store in garage.

The "New to You" sale on the weekend was successful on several fronts. The most pertinent to this project being that an entire mini-van, packed full, was removed out of the current home. And what I mean by full is that a Tetris champion would have been impressed.

At the sale, our booth looked like this:

The bins held kids clothes, sorted by gender and size.

When we were done, the remaining items were taken to my daughter's home for a soon to be scheduled garage sale.

Sunday, the household mass was reduced by another couple of bins full, as I delivered the items I had sold on-line.

So much lifting and toting is waking up muscles that have been hibernating all winter.By the time I got to the house to clean on Monday, I was tuckered right out.

Robin comes home on Tuesday. It will be his second time inside the new house. The differences from his first walk through to now, will be obvious to him. But to me, in the thick of it, I just keep reminding myself......inch by inch.

Sassy Breesehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12499730848878614492noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142207570537122333.post-78053905985063098052014-04-04T19:47:00.000-07:002014-04-04T19:47:11.435-07:00Day Four

Friday started at a balmy -2C degrees. Hooray! We will be in plus temperatures today. A short snow squall lasted just long enough for me to say "What the...??" and then it melted as quickly as it fell.

An early call from brother and it was lined up to have my helper remove the particle board sub-floor. The residue from the demolition work is starting to form quite a pile. To cut down on the lifting and moving and lifting again, a contingency of Philippines showed up to push a converted trailer closer to the house.

I had errands to run in town, and didn't get to start scrubbing until after 2 p.m. So I didn't make my goal today, but I am up to the cupboard before the fridge. And very happy that there were no more calling cards from furry critters today.

By the ends of the day, the living room floor is down to it's base.

The weekend with be reno free for me. Day 5 will have me busy with a "New to You" sale where I will be helping my daughter sell the baby clothes I no longer have room to store for her. (very, very sad to say good bye to all these wee things) and Day 6 is a meet-up day for the on-line auction groups I am in.

Will return on Monday with more of the same action packed, riveting, edge of you seat, play by play of the old, tired, and ugly, house renovations.

Sassy Breesehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12499730848878614492noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142207570537122333.post-67793416796770661552014-04-03T18:50:00.001-07:002014-04-03T18:50:40.665-07:00Day Three

And behind cupboard door number two, is mouse droppings. Great. Really old ones too. Will be taking steel wool with me tomorrow to plug up the obvious entry points around the plumbing. Also made a note to watch for "free kitten" adds this spring. There are enough out-buildings to house a dozen or more felines.

Also today I have my first visitor. A Jehovah's Witness came to my door. Guess I am not as remotely located as I thought.

Was delighted when brother dropped off his helper, again. More flooring removed. And all the nails and screws and sundry fasteners that populated the walls, ceilings and windows are now history. Pulled out an old boot shelf and some "floating" corner mirror shelves too.
In all I sanitized one set of upper/lower cabinets and two drawers, and cleaned as best I could under the sink. Yes that is pretty slow for a day's work, but I am moving slowly, as I hurt in a lot of places. And I am being really fussy about reaching all the surfaces and getting into the corners. Evan in behind the drawers (which is where the majority of the dropping laid) Inch, by inch, is my motto today.
And so we begin.

Tenants have vacated. And for a couple of knarly bachelors, they left the digs in fairly good shape. Their stuff was gone and the kitchen floor swept and mopped. But in typical female fashion, I will have to do a deep cleaning to remove every trace of previous occupancies. And it is spring, (sort of) so a good spring cleaning is in order.

Started the day by taking 200+ photos of the interior. I always seem to forget to take "before" shots and then get half way through a project before I think about it. Hard to do before/after comparison when all you have is a photo from in the thick of it. So today I tried to get all the details of walking around the house. They will be good for reference later.

After that, I really didn't know what to do. Where to start? I walked around looking at details like the cove molding, and nibbled on dark chocolate, trying to get my bearings. Kind of a meet and greet between the abode and me. Eventually I occurred to me that the first thing that you see as you come in the door would be a good beginning. A stretch of glass door cabinets face the entrance. Below them, a straight bank of bottom cabinets with drawers. An afternoon of scrub a dub-dub, they are whistle clean and sparkly now.

In the middle of that job, my brother showed up with an able helper. When they were done, all the rugs, under-padding and carpet strips were pulled up and hauled to the dump. Guess that means we are committed to new flooring. I keep reminding myself that it has to get worse, before it gets better.

Tomorrow we will find out, what's inside cupboard number two.
Last day before my little world changes. By this time tomorrow, I should be knee high in ripped out carpets and suffering from my dust allergies. As Robin heads off today for a week of work, the pleasure of surveying the detritus of the previous tenant will be mine alone.

With the mindset that what moves out now does not have to be moved out later, we have spent the last three month reducing our belongings by selling and donating. Darling daughter has spent two days, this past week, sorting, repacking and labeling many bins children's clothes and baby accoutrements. They were stored in the spacious and dry basement of this home. Bye-bye big space. Bye-bye dry basement. On Saturday, we will be carting it all to a "Moms' and Tots' " sale in our town.

Have spent the last three months waiting, wondering and worrying. Unlimited to-do list. Limited time, energy and money. Going to be interesting to see how it plays out. Fortunately there is one thing that I can do well, and that does not cost a lot of money. I can clean!
Moving.

A word that strikes fear and anxiety attacks in the hearts of thousands (millions?) of women each year. And this year, I have become one of the members of this less than desirable group.

An impending move of household and garden, has been foisted upon us by life's circumstances. We will be leaving a country home, situated on a farm quarter section. At first we deliberated where to move. To a town? To a hamlet? To an acreage? A condominium? Although I didn't feel any joy about it, the world was our oyster for a few days. Then one morning I awoke with the realization, that if we move to the home that was available, only a mile and a half away, (also a country home on a farm quarter section) we would not have to change our mailing address. It will remain the same box number at the same rural post office. Also, we would not have to make lifestyle changes and could continue with our love of gardening and various interests, like collecting vintage camping trailers, that require much space. That was all it took to clear my head of all the options. The savings of time and money (changing vehicle registrations and driver's license etc.) was enough to help me move from utter dread and an urge to go stick my head in a snow bank (no sand, this time of year) to beginning to make plans and take positive steps to prepare for the move.

The new home will be older, smaller and less livable than the one we are leaving. The current home is large and full of furniture and the accouterments of life. Add to that a fully usable basement with a scrapbook studio in excess of 300 square feet, and I have a lot of downsizing to accomplish.

As winter wanes and we move towards the big shift over, I have been reevaluating possessions. Many things get accumulated simply because there is a space to fill. Thus many items in my extensive collections are truly not necessary to the daily patterns of life. They are just comfortable to have around. Or pretty. Or something one might "need" in the future. With the mindset that what gets out of the house now, does not have to be moved later, I have been dispersing possessions through on-line auctions, donations to charity shops, and passing on to friends and relatives, items that may be of particular interest to them.

Yet many nights I loose sleep over the worries and concerns of what will be, and how it will happen, and when. As we are moving over the course of a several weeks, I am not sure when or what will delineate the change over from being at one house to occupation of the second. There will be no doubt once the kitchen, bathroom and master bed room has made the relocation, that we will be living in the new house, however, as I will be moving things, one mini-van full at a time, these three main rooms will not arrive all on the same day.

Yet moving the household is not the only concern. We also have a garden to move. A large garden including extensive perennials, trees, and large rocks. Oh yeah, and a garden house. And a green house. And vintage campers, cars, and tractor. It is going to be a busy, busy month.

So with so much on my plate, is it any wonder that I would twig onto the idea that this needs to be blogged? After all, I will be sure to have time when the weather does not cooperate, or I am waiting for extra hands to show up to shift something larger, or I am just too weary and sore to dig another plant.

And that what has brought me to this moment of developments. So I would like to welcome you to my new home here in bloggy world. You can follow along with my <strike>mis</strike> adventures, and cheer me on or shake your head, wondering why we don't just rent a bulldozer. Because I promise you, it's gonna get really bad before it gets better.

Of course you must be curious to see the new abode. Just a peek for now, ok?
